Stears is an intelligence company aiming to define a new standard for access to quality analysis and data in Nigeria. We have a team of editors and writers spread out in Lagos, Abuja, London, Dubai, Tennessee and more. Our writers mainly have backgrounds in economics, finance, law, international relations and politics.

Our media team (Stears Business) publishes high-quality insight and analysis on public policy, business, governance, the economy, financial markets and more. We are looking for new team members who want to experiment with high-quality media content covering business, finance and governance in Nigeria. You will be able to work from remote locations, and also in Lagos.

Business Journalist

Stears is looking for a business / financial journalist to oversee our coverage of the Nigerian business world.

The role will require an understanding of business trends in Nigeria and ability to build relationships with business stakeholders, media houses and financial institutions. The role will also include a public profile as a Stears Journalist and willingness to become an authority on matters concerning the Nigerian economic and business outlook.

Content will be expected to appear in a variety of formats, from articles, infographics and reports to video, podcast and interactive stories.


In this role the Business Editor would be expected to:

  • Deliver coverage of business and market activity in Nigeria

  • Monitor corporate, economic and financial events across Nigeria to deliver commentary and high quality coverage

  • Identify, lead and manage new and creative daily content, stories and formats

  • Champion multimedia content and as a medium of distribution

  • Curate and analyse audience and readership analytics

  • Ensure content meets the quality standards, branding rules and editorial guidelines

  • Develop and deliver economic and finance content, including proposing topics through research, trending topics and viral content

  • Arrange, schedule and run video interviews with economic and finance stakeholders, policymakers and businesspeople


To succeed in the role you must have:

  • Education to degree level

  • Experience in media and journalism through having worked in media or worked closely in media.

  • Excellent writing, editing, presentation and stakeholder management skills.

  • An interest in learning about any topic from business and industry related issues to new technologies.

  • Strong research and project management skills.

  • An interest in building a public profile through presence in social media and working with the marketing/PR team.

  • IT and Communications: Familiarity with Microsoft Word, Powerpoint, and Excel

  • Presentation and moderation/chairing skills helpful
