How Ghana came to dominate yam exports

Jan 13, 2021|Gbemisola Alonge

The Nigeria-Ghana rivalry has spanned across various debates—from jollof rice to football. Yet, one area where Ghana undoubtedly excels more than Nigeria is in yam exports.

West Africa produces the most yams globally, and Nigeria tops the charts with about 67% of global yam production, dwarfing Ghana's 10%.

Yet, Ghana contributed 94% of the total yams exported from West Africa and 22% of global exports in 2019.

Nigeria produces about 40-50 million metric tonnes every year while Ghana produces eight million metric tonnes annually. The stark difference is expected when you consider how much land is cultivated in Nigeria, relative to Ghana.
