“There is a gold project in the southwestern part of Nigeria, Osun state. The construction of the mine has started, they have gone through the exploration phase, and hopefully, by the end of this year (2020), they want to begin exporting gold. This will be the first time in Nigeria's history,” Mr Olamilekan Adegbite, the Minister of Mines and Steel Development, said to CNBC at an African mining conference in Cape Town.
You could tell he was proud of this achievement, who wouldn't? For the first time in over seventy years, Nigeria will mine its gold commercially and sell it to the rest of the world.
The Ministry of Mines and Steel Development claims Nigeria has a large deposit of gold, the second most valuable asset in the country, after oil and gas, without telling us exactly how much we have.
A similar claim was made in 2016, when Nasir
