Tracked development: can Nigeria's railway lines keep the economy moving?

Aug 30, 2021|Gbemisola Alonge

I was anxious as I rushed out of my Uber to the ticket stand at the Mobolaji Johnson train terminal in Yaba. Something was off that morning and I couldn’t quite place my finger on it. I wasn’t sure if it was the anxiety of missing the train or the fact that the weekend had flown by without warning, leaving me just as exhausted as it met me.

This was my fifth time using the train, and I was undoubtedly the biggest fan of this new infrastructure. It just made life easier, and I was willing to milk it. Now, both amala (the best type) and my friends who live in Ibadan were just a simple train ride. I had joined a new crop of travellers across Nigeria. Commuters who hardly travelled the Lagos-Ibadan route in the past, but have now started to, because of the existence of the train.
